Fireworks and Thunder Tips

Fireworks and pets don’t mix. Dogs and cats who normally don’t roam may do so when fireworks and thunder stress them out so be extra careful to make sure they are in a secure place.

1) Create a safe place with a comfy bed/mat/blanket in a dark space ( under your desk, side of closet, laundry room, bathroom. Look to the space your pet likes to go when they need comfort. DARK is key, and you will find that many pets learn how to self sooth in a safe place if given the chance.

2) Play soothing music

3) Naturopathic treatment (Resuce Remedy and Calms available at health food stores)

4) YOU stay quiet and mild; calm people set the tone for calm pets (making a big deal about their stress will make them think there’s a reason they should be stressing).

5) NO unattended dogs outside in a yard or kennel during firework or thunder season, and NO off leash dogs if there is a chance of thunder or firework noise. No cats outside during thunderstorms or fireworks.

NOTE: all loose pets reclaimed from Stafford Shelter will have their reclamation fee waived between 6/29 and 7/6 in acknowledgement of this pup-stressing time!  Check our Lost/Found Pets Page for photos and stop by during business hours to identify and pick pets up: Tues – Sat between noon and 6 pm and Sunday, July 2nd from 1 to 4 pm.
